Tampa, a city located within the State of Florida, is known as the county seat for Hillsborough County. During its early beginnings, this city was once home to indigenous people from the Pohoy and Tocobaga. Permanent European and American settlers in the city only began in 1819 after Spain had sold Florida to the United States of America. During the latter years of the 19th century, Tampa had experienced a surge in its development with the presence of the cigar industry as well as the discovery of the phosphate mineral in the area.
Today, Tampa is an established and thriving city which is included in the metropolitan area called the Tampa Bay Area. The city was given a high 5th ranking by Forbes as one of the top best outdoor cities in 2008. In addition to this, it is considered as one of the best cities for young adults to live in. Tampa is also home to a variety of sports teams such as the Tampa Bay Lightning of the NHL, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFL and the Tampa Bay Storm of the AFL.
Tampa, Florida is home to a variety of sports arenas which include the famous Tampa Bay Times Forum. This arena is commonly used to a variety of sports events for arena football, basketball and ice hockey games. It also is known to host a series of other events such as concerts and other live performances. It also played host to the Royal Hanneford Circus, incidentally also the first performance held in the arena. Located in the downtown area of Tampa, particularly along the Channelside District, the Tampa Bay Times Forum opened to the public in 1996.
Fondly known as the “Ray Jay”, the Raymond James Stadium is also located in the city of Tampa. This multipurpose football stadium is also the home of several sports teams such as the South Florida Bulls Football Team of the NCAA and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League. The Ray Jay is able to accommodate an approximate of 65,900 spectators which can be increased to an approximate of 75,000 seats during other events. To date, the Raymond James Stadium has played host to a series of sports events such as the Super Bowl.
Formerly called Legends Field, the George M. Steinbrenner Field was opened to the public in 1996 and can accommodate an approximate of 11,000 people. This baseball stadium is also the home of the New York Yankees during their spring training. It was known as the Legends field for many years until they renamed it after a Tampa resident who incidentally happened to be the owner of the Yankees as well.
