The capital of North Carolina, the city of Raleigh, is the second largest city within the state, coming in at second from Charlotte. Also known as the “city of Oaks”, the city is the 42th largest city within the country. The city was named as such in honor of Sir Walter Raleigh.
The city of Raleigh showcases many museums for both locals and foreign tourists to visit in order to gain knowledge and insight about its culture and history. Some of this includes the Contemporary Art Museum, the African American Cultural Complex, North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh City Museum, Pope House Museum and many more. Asides from museums, the city also showcases a variety of theatres to provide added culture and art appreciation aspects for those who visit these establishments.
A place likely to hold many events is the PNC arena, formerly called the RBC Center and the Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena. This indoor area is located within the city of Raleigh and can accommodate an approximate of 18,680 spectators during ice hockey games and 19,722 during basketball games. The arena also includes 2,000 club seats, 66 luxury suites and houses a large restaurant which can seat up to 300 people. The PNC Arena is currently home to several sports teams which include the Men’s Basketball Team of North Carolina State University and the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes.
The Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts is another events venue located in Raleigh. The center is named after Progress Energy since the company bought its naming rights for a 20-year period. It houses several other event venues, one of which is the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium. This particular auditorium was first opened to the public in 1932 and is able to accommodate an approximate of 2,277 people. The Raleigh Memorial Auditorium was renovated several times and now plays host to a series of musical productions.
Another event venue in the city of Raleigh is the Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion at Walnut Creek, previously known as the Walnut Creek Amphitheatre, the Alltel Pavilion and Hardee’s Walnut Creek Amphitheater. This outdoor amphitheater is known to be able to accommodate larger scaled performances and concerts. Part of a large 77-acre complex, this venue was built by the city of Raleigh with the help of the private sector. It was formally opened to the public in 1991 and can accommodate an approximate of 6,847 people. At present, the event place is managed by Live Nation.
