Reno, located within the state of Nevada, is Washoe County’s county seat. Asides from Las Vegas, Reno is also known to be the home to many casinos and is also fondly known as “The Biggest Little City in the World”. Harrah’s Entertainment, a popular gaming corporation, was also established in this thriving city. In 1931, the city began to bank in the gambling, when it was finally legalized. Since the state of Nevada offered much more than the other states, many casinos have been built and eventually became popular such as the Palace and the Bank Club. Divorce laws were established in the state as well, thus making it a popular place for divorces at that time. Through the years, the divorce business dwindled down when other states began to pass their own divorce laws. However, the gambling industry in Reno remained strong to this day. Asides from casinos, the city also houses a variety of establishments such as the National Automobilce Museum, the Wilbur D. May Center, the Nevada Museum of Art and many others.
One place to get a taste of entertainment in the city of Reno is the Reno Events Center, located within the downtown area of the city. This multi-purpose arena can accommodate an approximate of 7,500 spectators and was built in 2005. The Reno Events Center is the present home of the National Basketball Association Development League’s Reno Bighorns and was the home of the Western Indoor Football Association’s Reno Barons. Asides from featuring football and basketball games, this center also plays host to a variety of performances and concerts.
The Silver Legacy Resort & Casino, opened to the public in 1995, is also located in the city of Reno. This casino and hotel is managed by Eldorado Resorts and is a joint venture by the MGM Resorts International and Eldorado Resorts LLC. In 2012, the Silver Legacy Resort & Casino had experienced a bankruptcy threat and was in danger for foreclosure. However, after a series of hardships, the casino was able to get out of bankruptcy and eventually was back on track to serve as one of Reno’s local hotspots and entertainment venue.
The Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, also located within the city of Reno was built in 1967 and designed by Bozalis, Dickinson and Roloff. This performing arts center is able to accommodate an approximate of 513 people on the balcony and about 987 within the main level area. Formerly known as the Apollo Theater, this center is now included in the list of National Register of Historic Places as of 2005.
