Washington Wizards
The Washington Wizards began its storied life in the NBA as an expansion team in 1961 as the Chicago Packers. They will go through several name changes – Zephyrs in 1963; Baltimore Bullets in 1963 after moving to Baltimore, Maryland; Capital Bullets when they moved to Landover, Maryland in 1973; Washington Bullets in 1974; until finally on May 15, 1997, the Washington Bullets became officially known as the Washington Wizards. The choice of changing the team’s name once more came out of team owner Abe Pollin’s uncomfortable feeling about the appellation Bullets. He connected the name with the high crime and homicide rate during that era in Washington, D.C. His decision to look for a new name was cemented when his longtime friend Yitzhak Rabin, the Prime Minister of Israel at the time, was assassinated. A contest was held and the names Wizards, Sea Dogs, Stallions, Express, and Dragons were proposed. Wizards won but it wasn’t without controversy since Washington the city was populated mainly by African-Americans and it turned out that the Ku Klux Klan has a Wizard rank. In spite of this, the name remained but a new logo was designed and the colors changed to blue, black and bronze from red, white and blue.
Michael Jordan joined the team as its minority owner and president of basketball operations in January 2000. In September of the following year, Jordan stepped out of retirement and began to play for the team after divesting himself of the team’s minority ownership, as required by NBA rules. He went on to improve the Washington Wizards’ for the season with 37-45 record, an 18-win progress compared to the team’s previous season record. Jordan continued to play for the 2002-2003 season in 82 games averaging 20 points per game. But things did not go well for Michael and the team because he was fired by Pollin at the end of the season. Jordan thought he would get his minority ownership of the team back but he didn’t as Pollin said that Jordan made poor decisions for the team. The Wizards fell to a 25-57 record the following season. The Washington Wizards is currently owned by Ted Leonsis.
