The Rutgers Scarlet Knights have recorded significant contributions to intercollegiate sports especially in college football. The State University of New Jersey has been home for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and was the venue of the first ever intercollegiate game of football in 1869 against Princeton Tigers of Princeton University, formerly called College of New Jersey. The Rutgers had shown brutal football prowess after defeating the Tigers in a score of 6 against 4. Aside from football, they also showed sportsmanship in other ball games and various field games competing in the Big East Conference in NCAA’s Division I while campuses in other areas compete in Division III.

Aside from Princeton, the Rutgers is also in competition with long-time rival universities like Columbia, Lafayette College, and Lehigh. The teams battle it out not just in football wherein the Rutgers won two Bowl Championships in 2008, one in 2009 and another one in 2011. They also won two National Championships for the women’s basketball team, two titles for track and field, and two for cheerleading competitions in 1996 and 2009.

The long gaps in landing national titles was spread in other sports categories. In fact, they only managed to win one championships for other sports like a lone Conference title for soccer, one in men’s fencing and basketball in years 1949 and 1989 respectively, and baseball with one National title for year 2000. Despite this, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights made significant contributions in various professional playing fields with the likes of Alexi Lalas, Eddie Jordan, Sonny Werblin, Jeff Torborg, Jim Valvano, and David Stern. Other notable names in soccer that further made Rutgers alma-matter proud are Jon Conway and Josh Gros while Rutgers women in soccer also made a mark with the likes of Carli Lloyd who went to play for the World Cups.
