NBA All Star Game
The NBA All-Star Game is held every year at the middle of the regular playing season. It involves the best players in each conference. The players participating in the All-Star Game are chosen by fan votes, with the player receiving the most vote for each position becoming the starting player. The reserve players are selected by votes of the head coaches in each conference. Coaches, however, are not allowed to vote for a player in their teams. Any player who cannot participate because of injury or any other reason shall be replaced by another player chosen by the commissioner.
The Eastern Conference team shall be coached by the coach with best record in the conference as of January 31st. The same manner of selection applies to the coach of the Western Conference team. Following the "Riley Rule", no coach cannot make the All-Star in two consecutive seasons. In the event that the coach with the best record is the previous year's conference team coach, the position goes to the coach with the second best record.
The first NBA All-Star game was held on March 2, 1951 at the Boston Garden, with the Eastern All-Stars winning over the Western All-Stars. It became an annual tradition in the NBA up to the present. The only time the All-Star game was cancelled was in 1999 due to the league's lockout. An All-Star Game Most Valuable Player is selected at the end of the game.
The NBA All-Star Game is governed by the normal NBA rules. Special uniforms are worn by the players during each year, typically red for the West and blue for the East. The conference that is hosting the game wears the home's light uniforms.
The All-Star Game is the main anticipated event in the All-Star Weekend and is played on a Sunday night. The All-Star Weekend features also other games and competitions, such as slam dunk contest and three-point shooting contest, involving not only the current players but NBA alumni and players from the Women's National Basketball Association and the NBA Development League.
The All-Star Game for the 2012-2013 season will be hosted by the Houston Rockets and will be played at the Toyota Center.
