The Detroit Lions is a professional American football team from the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL) that is based in Detroit, Michigan. The home stadium of the Detroit Lions is the Ford Field located in Downtown Detroit. The Detroit Lions were originally located in Portsmouth, Ohio and were known as the Portsmouth Spartans. The team was formed in 1929 where they began to play as an independent professional team such as other teams in Ohio and Scioto River valleys.

During the 1930 season, the Portsmouth Spartan joined the NFL while the other independent teams did not survive. Because Portsmouth was a relatively small city, the team was purchased and transferred to Detroit during the 1934 season. Throughout their history, the Detroit Lions have already won four NFL Championships of which the last was in 1957 making them the second longest NFL championship drought after Arizona Cardinals. During the Super Bowl era, the Detroit Lions were not successful become one of the four NFL teams that has yet to qualify for Super Bowl. The Detroit Lions 2008 team is the only team in the history of NFL to have lost all their regular season games.

By 2012, this will be the 83d season for the Detroit Lions and their fourth season under their current coach Jim Schwartz. In 2011, the Lions came from a record of 10-6-0.
