Cirque du Soleil is a world class circus act based from Canada. They are usually described as a “dramatic mix of circus arts and street entertainment”. Cirque du Soleil was founded in Baie-Saint-Paul in Montreal, Quebec in 1984 by former street performers Gilles Ste-Croix and Guy Laliberte. The initial name of Ste-Croix and Laliberte was Les Echassiers. In 1980, they already toured in Quebec but encountered some financial problems which were resolved by a government grant in 1983. From their funds, they started Le Grand Tour du Cirque du Soleil which became a success in 1984 that secured their second year of funding. Laliberte decided to further improve the company and hired Guy Caron of the National Circus School to train the group into a real circus without the animals performing. This has made Cirque du Soleil an example of a contemporary circus act.

Since they started, Cirque du Soleil immediately expanded in the following years. They have performed over 19 shows in 271 cities across of the globe. Their performances have garnered numerous awards such as Bambi Awards in 1997, Drama Desk Award in 1988 and 1991, Rose d’Or, Gemini Awards and Primetime Emmy Awards. They have produced different shows such as Varekai, Quidam, Zaia, Saltimbanco and Kooza. Cirquw du Soleil – Kooza first debuted in Montreal, Canada in 2007. It was written and directed by David Shiner who initially worked as a clown in the production Nouvelle Experience of Cirque du Soleil. Kooza is a story about The Innocent which is a melancholic loner who is in search of a place he belongs in this world. As he journeys, he encounters numerous comic characters such as the Pickpocket, the Obnoxious Tourist, The King, and the Trickster. Kooza showcases the acrobatic performance as well as the art of clowning. Kooza will be shown in Texas in September and Florida in November. They also have scheduled performances in the United Kingdom and Belgium in January and July 2013 consecutively
