The Blue Man Group is called such due to their unique and somewhat comical appearances. The three actors make use of blue makeup and bald caps to complete their theatrical looks.

Two members of the Blue Man Group, Matt Goldman and Chris Wink had been friends since junior high and briefly parted ways during their college years. After college, they went back to New York City and met their third member, Phil Stanton in 1986. In 1987, they decided to form the Blue Man Group and began to perform in different parts of the city which included the Central Park and Dixon Place.

Soon after, they were hired to create and perform a full length show at The Club @ La Mama by Meryl Vladimer. With their show entitled “Tubes” they began to gain popularity and performed at the Lincoln Center with the show entitled “Serious Fun”. In the beginning, the members of the group would talk to their audiences after the show. However, they eventually began to stay in character even after the performance was done.

To date, the Blue Man Group has gained international recognition and popularity. For this reason, they had toured in many countries which include Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Canada.
