Who doesn’t know Oprah Winfrey? She’s a household name. She is the most influential woman in the world, according to many publications.
Now Oprah Winfrey will be appearing during early April 2013 in Montreal at Centre Bell and in Hamilton at Copps Coliseum to share her personal story. In an event, dubbed “An Evening with Oprah Winfrey”, this great woman aims to inspire people with her rise from poverty to power.
Oprah was born in poverty to a teenage single mother in the rural parts of Mississippi and was raised by her grandmother. She claimed to being raped at age nine by family members and ran away from home at thirteen. She got pregnant at fourteen but her baby died soon after being born. She was then sent to her father in Nashville, Tennessee where her life finally fell into place.
Oprah began her career in media during her senior year in high school when local black radio station of Nashville WVOL hired her for a part-time job. After studying communication at the Tennessee State University, Winfrey worked at several radio and TV stations before landing the job that brought her fame. Oprah moved to Chicago to host WLS-TV’s talk show AM Chicago and within a few months she managed to turn the show from poor ratings to being the top talk show of Chicago, surpassing even Donahue. After this the syndicated The Oprah Winfrey Show was created.
Oprah’s appeal to viewers is her unique way of talk show hosting. She has the ability to connect with her audience and empathize with her guests and their stories. Critics say she has more intelligence, wit and soul than most other talk show hosts.
From 2004 to 2011, Oprah has consistently been on Time Magazine’s Most Influential People and she is the only one who has been in the list for eight consecutive years. In 2010, Life Magazine included Oprah in the list of 100 people who changed the world, putting her side by side with Jesus Christ, Elvis Presley and Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. Other publications have placed her in the same category of being the most influential woman in the country or even the world, and even President Barrack Obama agrees.
