Mumford and Sons
Emerging from what British music writers call as the "West London folk scene", Mumford & Sons are an English folk rock band formed in December 2007. Comprising the band are: Marcus Mumford (vocals, guitar, drums, mandolin), Ben Lovett (vocals, keyboards, accordion, drums), "Country" Winston Marshall (vocals, banjo, dobro, guitar), and Ted Dwane (vocals, string bass, drums, guitar).
Inspired by the writings of Shakespeare, Plato, and Steinbeck, to name a few, their songs have primarily drawn in the literary types of listeners. Touring with their EP, Love Your Ground, in the UK and US had gradually gained them a following. In early 2008 the band began working with manager Adam Tudhope who helped them get signed to Island. The band's major performance to a much wider audience was at the famous Glastonbury Festival.
Their first album, Sigh No More (released in the UK and Ireland in October 2009; February 2010 in the US), reached number one in Ireland, Australia and New Zealand and number two on the UK Album Charts. It landed in the US Billboard 200. Its lead single, "Little Lion Man", was highly favored by critics. The band played it during their guest appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman on 17 February 2010. Mumford & Sons won an ARIA Music Award for Most Popular International Artist in November 2010. "Little Lion Man" earned them Grammy Award nominations for Best New Artist and Best Rock Song. No awards; but they got to play one of their songs, "The Cave", at the Grammy ceremony, earning them great media exposure and raised their album sales by 99%.
Their popularity consistently grew; UK sales reached 266 % and major awards had finally arrived in 2011. One of them was the European Border Breakers Award. They played, again, at the Glastonbury Festival. Their second album, Babel, was released on September 24 2012. A 12 song album with its lead single, "I Will Wait". It became one of the fastest selling albums in that year.
