Journey
Journey is an American rock band formed in San Francisco nearly 40 years ago in 1973. Originally a progressive rock band composed by former members of Santana and other Bay Area musicians, they later evolved into a more commercial group and went through many line up changes.
Journey’s first few albums, the self-titled debut album in 1975; Look into the Future (1976) and Next (1977) were not commercially successful. In 1977, lead singer and keyboardist, Gregg Rolie left, and Steve Perry came with his clean tenor voice. His more commercial tone landed their fourth album, Infinity (1978), at the No. 21 slot on the album charts. Its hit singles, "Lights" and "Wheel in the Sky" made the album their first RIAA-certified platinum. Journey reached its heights in the ‘80s with their biggest-selling studio album, Escape (1981) which included three top-ten hits, "Who's Cryin' Now", "Don't Stop Believin'", and "Open Arms". Frontiers was released in 1983 with another all time power ballad hit, “Faithfully”. Escape, the group's seventh album sold over 9-million copies. Journey temporarily disbanded in 1987. While Perry went on a solo career, guitarist Neal Schon and keyboardist Jonathan Cain teamed up with other musicians to form Bad English. Journey reunited in the mid 1990s, later recruiting a series of lead singers. Steve Perry sang from 1995-98 and Steve Augeri from 1998-2006. Augeri was dropped due to his chronic throat infections and was replaced by Jeff Scott Soto. He was replaced in December 2007 by Arnel Pineda, a vocalist from the Philippines who was recruited after seen by Neal Schon on YouTube doing Journey covers. With the new line up, Revelation was released in 2008 and became certified platinum followed by successful world tours.
One might have the impression that Journey is an ‘80s nostalgia arena pop rock band. Their latest album, Eclipse (2011), however, delivers a more metallic edge, which might disappoint those who like them as a sappy ballad factory. The Journey goes on, looking for new musical terrains to venture, drawing more fans aside from those who heared the show, Glee, doing a teeny version of "Don't Stop Believin."
