In 2000, the film Billy Elliot was made available worldwide. Due to its success, it was eventually turned into a Musical entitled “Billy Elliot the Musical”. All the music in the musical were created by Elton John while the lyrics and books were created by Lee Hall, also the writer for the original film feature version.

The story of the musical is about Billy Elliot, a boy with no mother, who begins to take a liking to ballet and eventually giving up boxing. Asides from the struggles of the main character, the musical revolves around the problems within the community and families during the UK Miners strike from the years 1984 to 1985 in the North Eastern part of England in County Durham. Lee Hall was essentially inspired to base his screenplay from the book of A.J. Cronin entitled “The Stars Look Down” and amply pays tribute to it during the opening song of the Musical.

In 2005, Billy Elliot the Musical premiered at the Victoria Palace Theatre in the West End. To date, it can still be seen in the theatre with extended plays until the 21st of December in 2013. The musical in the Victoria Palace Theatre is directed by Stephen Daldry and under the professional choreography of Peter Darling.

In addition to London’s West End production, the musical has been performed in various other places due to its popularity. In 2007, the musical made its debut in Australian shores at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney. In 2008, the musical moved on to the Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne, which finally ended on 2009.

The Imperial Theatre in Broadway was home to the musical in 2008 and would eventually have a first National Tour with extended performance dates in the area of Chicago.

The musical has received many awards including four Laurence Olivier Awards as well as various Drama Desk Awards and Tony Awards.
